About Strays

Strays is made by Cloud Adept Limited, a UK consultancy founded in 2014 that builds and runs AWS for small and growing companies.

In almost every account we looked after, we found the same things: resources left running after a project, security settings changed "just for now", and nobody quite sure who owned what. Strays is the tool we wanted: it finds those strays, asks the right person, and keeps the evidence, without needing a platform team.

What Strays does

Strays connects to your AWS accounts with a read-only role and looks for three things:

• Waste: resources you pay for but don't use, such as unattached disks, idle load balancers, old snapshots and forgotten NAT gateways, priced from AWS's own list prices.
• Security risks: settings that leave you exposed, such as ports open to the internet, public data, users without MFA, old access keys and gaps in logging.
• Evidence: what auditors, insurers and customers ask for, mapped to Cyber Essentials, ISO 27001 and SOC 2, with monthly access reviews and leaver reports.

It works out who owns each finding, from tags or from who created it in CloudTrail, and asks them directly in Slack or Microsoft Teams, so fixing it doesn't wait for a platform team.

How it's built

• Read-only. The role Strays uses can't change anything in your AWS account. Every permission is listed, with the reason for it, on What Strays installs.
• Hosted in the UK. The app and your data are in AWS London (eu-west-2). See Security and trust.
• Built on open source. The scanner at its heart is costwatch, our own open-source AWS waste scanner, which anyone can read and run.
• Tested every week. An automated security scan runs every Monday, and every page of the website and app is checked for accessibility before each release.
